Google's AI Answers Now Carry Links: Will Your Small Business Website Get the Click?

As Google AI answers add links, a clear website with accurate information gives a local business a better chance of earning the click. Illustrative image.

On 15 October 2026, Google announced that Google AI answers will include links to websites, plus a dedicated section for a business's official website. A business with a clear website and accurate information has a better chance of being clicked straight from the answer. One whose site is blocked from indexing, or whose details are wrong, is more likely to be overlooked.

Customers of Vietnamese-owned nail salons, restaurants, clinics and accounting firms across Australia increasingly type a full question instead of a few keywords. Artificial intelligence (AI) assistants pull information together from several pages and then suggest where to go. A website with missing or incorrect details is less likely to be chosen as a source.

Key Takeaways

  • According to Google, the 15 October 2026 update adds links directly inside AI answers, a dedicated section for official websites and clickable creator profiles.
  • Your website only needs to be indexed by Google and eligible to show a snippet. Google says no special files or tricks are required.
  • From 31 August 2026, Search Console includes a report on how often a site appears in AI answers, with an option to switch inclusion on or off for the whole site. Most businesses should leave it on.
  • Services, service areas and price ranges should be written as text on the page and match your Google Business Profile, the business listing shown on Google Maps and Search.

What has Google just changed in its AI answers?

On 15 October 2026, Google published a series of updates to AI answers in Search on its official blog, The Keyword. Three changes matter most for small businesses: more links within the body of the answer, a dedicated section for official websites and clickable creator profiles.

Many business owners have worried that once AI answers a question, customers will stop clicking through to the website. This update suggests Google is trying to guide people from the answer to the original page.

Launchforge Studio (18 October 2026) asked whether small websites will actually receive more clicks. That depends on whether a page offers clear enough information to be chosen as a source.

Note that the “official website” section only makes sense if your business has its own website. A business that relies solely on social media pages or directory listings will find it hard to appear there.

What does a website need to appear in Google AI answers?

According to Google, a page only needs to meet two conditions. First, it must be indexed, meaning Google has crawled it and stored it in its search database. Second, it must be eligible to show a snippet, which is the short description beneath the title in search results. Google states that no special files or tricks are required.

This helps business owners avoid unnecessary spending. “AI optimisation” packages that promise special files or technical hacks to get you into AI answers are not based on Google's guidance.

The real risk lies in the opposite direction: a website that is accidentally blocked from indexing or from showing snippets, for example after moving from a test version to the live site. When that happens, even excellent content cannot appear.

Check the new report in Search Console

Search Console is Google's tool for site owners to monitor how their pages perform in Search. According to Skillful Antics (16 October 2026), from 31 August 2026 the tool includes a report on how often a website appears in AI answers. Site owners can also switch appearance on or off for the entire site.

We recommend checking this setting and leaving it on. If it is switched off, your website removes itself from a channel that local customers increasingly use to find services.

Customers ask AI more specific questions. What should your website say?

Questions put to AI assistants tend to be longer and more specific than traditional keywords. For example, instead of typing “Sunshine accountant”, a customer might ask, “Which accountant in Sunshine works with construction businesses?”

To answer that, an AI model needs to find the information as text on a page. A website that only says “accounting services” will struggle to match a question about the construction industry.

  • Services: list each main service with a short description and the type of customer it suits.
  • Service areas: state the suburbs and cities you cover, and where you take customers or travel to work on site.
  • Prices or price ranges: Example (assumed figures): “Acrylic full set from AUD 50”, “First 30-minute consultation: free”.
  • Contact details and opening hours: write them as text, not only inside images.

A common mistake is publishing price lists as PDFs, menus as photos, or details that only appear in pop-up windows. Customers can still view them, but search systems may miss them or quote them incompletely.

What if your website and Google Business Profile don't match?

Your Google Business Profile is the business listing shown on Google Maps and Search. When the opening hours, phone number or service list there differ from your website, customers can receive incorrect information straight from the answer.

For example, your website says you open on Sundays, but your Google profile says you are closed. A customer might choose another business, or turn up to a closed door and leave a poor review.

Mismatches usually creep in when a business changes its seasonal hours, moves premises or adds a service, but updates only one place. A review doesn't take long, and it helps you avoid losing customers without realising it.

Within our Websites service, the Holdrix team can review your page structure, convert content from PDFs and images into text, and cross-check your details against your Google Business Profile.

How Holdrix works with you

Where should your business start?

  1. Search for your business name and try a question your customers often ask on Google, then see what the AI answer says about you.
  2. Compare your name, address, phone number, opening hours and services across your website and Google Business Profile, and fix any mismatches.
  3. Open Search Console, look at the new report and confirm the setting is on. If you don't have Search Console yet, ask your web provider to set it up.
  4. Convert price lists, menus and service lists from PDFs, images or pop-ups into text on the page.
  5. Ask your web provider to review the page structure: whether pages are indexed, whether snippets are blocked, and whether each service has its own page or section.

When don't you need to rebuild your website?

If your website is already indexed, accurate and clearly written in text, you probably don't need a full rebuild. Adjusting the content and keeping it updated is usually enough.

Consider a refresh if you can't edit the site yourself, most of your information sits in images, or no one holds the admin account any more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to pay for my website to appear in Google AI answers?

You don't pay Google anything. According to Google, a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, with no special files or tricks required.

Will a business with only a social media page appear in the official website section?

This section is for official websites, so a business with only a social media page will find it hard to appear. A Google Business Profile is still important, but it doesn't replace a website of your own.

How do I know if my website appears in AI answers?

According to Skillful Antics, from 31 August 2026 Search Console includes a report on how often a website appears in AI answers. You can ask your web provider to set it up and help you read the report.

In summary

Google's update announced on 15 October 2026 gives official websites a stronger place within Google AI answers. You don't need tricks. You need a website that is indexed, with information clearly written as text and consistent with your Google Business Profile.
